Anxiety at work

The workplace can be a very stressful environment even for those who do not have anxiety; for those that do, it can be unbearable and have a huge impact on day-to-day life. Working gives us purpose, routine and a support network of colleagues; all of which can be helpful when dealing with anxiety. However, it is sometimes the case that anxiety holds us back from performing to the best of our abilities. Although it may be difficult, it is recommended to talk to someone at work about how you are feeling. Whether this is your line manager or someone in human resources – if they don’t know how can they help support you? Most people have some experience of anxiety, you may be surprised at how supportive your workplace can be.

Workplace mental health

In 2019/20, an estimated 828,000 workers were affected by work-related stress, depression or anxiety, accounting for 51% of all work-related ill health and 55% of all days lost due to work-related ill-health. As an employer, it’s not just the financial cost to your business that you need to consider, but the impact on your employees and their perception of you as an employer. As a good employer, you’ll want to invest in your staff. Creating a mentally healthy workplace improves productivity, increases profit and brings out the best in everyone. People living with mental health difficulties can and do work and, supporting them can save you significant costs in terms of staff turnover, under-performance and untapped potential.
