Anxiety UK echoes calls for more to be done for young people’s mental health

Today Anxiety UK adds its voice to other mental health charities, including Sane, Rethink Mental Illness and the Mental Health Foundation, in calling for greater understanding and recognition of mental health problems in young people. Conditions like panic, anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) are more common than people think – affecting 1 in 4 people over the course of a year – and can be managed if treatment is sought early.

“We know from personal experience and from the calls we receive on the helpline how important early intervention is, especially for young people affected by mental health issues,” explains Anxiety UK chief executive, Nicky Lidbetter. “Receiving help for anxiety and panic early is crucial for young people in order to prevent a life-long problem with anxiety and whilst it is very difficult to go through, anxiety can be managed to allow the person to live a full, happy life.”

Anxiety UK’s Young Ambassador, 17-year old aspiring racing driver Cameron Twynham, adds: “As someone who has suffered from anxiety since I was 14 years old I understand how important it is to raise awareness and signpost young people to the support that is available.”

Increasing awareness amongst teachers, GPs and other adults who come into contact with children and young people about how mental health issues affect young people is crucial to ensure they are able to receive the right support early.

In addition to the individual support Anxiety UK provides to those affected by anxiety (including many young people), the charity also provides membership services to schools, including access to the helpline, fact-sheets and booklets as well as regular e-bulletins and bespoke services.
