How can audiobooks help anxiety?

Back October 10th, 2017

I have always read fantasy books when I wanted escapism.

I like to travel to a world populated by dragons, magic and quests to find calm. After all, when comparing my worries with the strenuous task of overthrowing a Dark Lord, everything feels a little easier.

I have found the best solace through the Harry Potter series, in particular through comparing myself to Hermione Granger. We both had the same untameable hair, the same precociousness, and the same streak of perfectionism. As a child, reading about how her best friends loved her for all of those reasons, not in spite of them, gave me comfort. As an adult, I still listen to the Harry Potter audiobooks regularly when I need relief from a difficult day, and I have no doubt that Stephen Fry reading a takeaway menu would be a comforting experience.

How Can Audiobooks Help Anxiety?

Audiobooks are great for escapism during times of anxiety or panic. A calming voice reading a book can provide companionship and a relaxing influence. Equally, if you are too distracted to concentrate on a book, they can help supply the comfort of reading.

There are lots of other ways audiobooks can help if you have an anxiety condition. Here are just some:

  1. If you struggle to touch a book due to a contamination fear, audiobooks can be a great way to continue to access reading.
  2. Audiobooks can help focus attention on a single narrative. Start with short radio dramas and work up to longer books.
  3. If stress triggers panic or recurrent impulses, audiobooks can help provide a distraction. Try listening to books you already know and like.
