In 2018 mental health conditions accounted for 12.4% (17.5 million days) of sickness absence in the UK – Source ONS Labour Force Survey, while work-related stress, depression or anxiety accounts for 44% of work-related ill health and 54% of working days lost, in 2018/19Source HSE Labour Force Survey .

Additionally, analysis by Deloitte shows poor mental health costs the UK economy between £74 billion and £99 billion a year; the cost to employers is between £33 billion and £42 billion of this number. Evaluations of workplace interventions show a return to business of between £1.50 and £9 for every £1 invested.

However, as an employer, it’s not just the financial cost to the business that needs to be considered, but the impact on the employee and their perception of you as an employer.
