Types Of Therapy

What kind of therapy should I have?

Counselling

Anxiety UK offers this via: Face to face, phone, webcam

How it works: Counselling is a form of talking therapy that allows you to speak openly about your feelings. It can help you process any negative thoughts and work through problems you are struggling with. A counsellor is trained to provide you a safe environment to express yourself, and will listen empathetically and without judgement. Counselling is helpful if you need extra support coping with difficult life events (losing your job, the end of a relationship). It can help you cope with and resolve feelings of shame, guilt, denial and anger.

How long does it last? Sessions typically last between 50 to 60 minutes with NICE guidelines recommending a course of 6-15 sessions to see lasting impact.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Anxiety UK offers this via: Face to face, phone, webcam

How it works: CBT involves examining your thoughts, feelings and behaviour patterns, and working out ways to remove yourself from these negative cycles. It mainly focuses on present concerns but certain CBT approaches can also address earlier traumatic memories that may contribute to your anxiety. CBT is very practical and your therapist may set you exercises such as thought journalling and different behavioural experiments as well as asking you to complete homework to supplement the discussions you have in the sessions. You will learn strategies that can be used in everyday life to manage your anxiety, even after your treatment has finished.

How long does it take? Sessions typically last between 50 to 60 minutes with NICE guidelines recommending a course of 6-15 sessions to see lasting impact.

ExtrResources: If you’re considering CBT, some initial reading material such as the recommended Overcoming series is an excellent introduction to CBT-based methods and will give you a better understanding of the treatment, as well as anxiety in general.

Clinical Hypnotherapy

Anxiety UK offers this via: Face to face

How it works: Clinical hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis for the treatment and alleviation of a variety of physical and psychological symptoms. Hypnosis allows the subject to experience often quite deep levels of relaxation and so helps to reduce levels of stress and anxiety. Two important elements of this therapy are the ability to clearly imagine something that makes you feel anxious and then to attain a deeply relaxed state. Hypnosis helps to achieve both of these more easily and quickly than many other forms of treatment. Please note that clinical hypnotherapy may not be an appropriate support in more complex cases.

How long does it take?

A general clinical hypnotherapy session will usually last around 50 to 60 minutes, with a typical course of 4-6 sessions to see lasting impact.

Extra Resources: If you have an interest in clinical hypnotherapy and self-relaxation, downloading the Headspace app may be beneficial to you. Guided meditation and mindfulness teaches you to remain in the present when anxious thoughts are playing on your mind, and Headspace has specific modules for combating anxiety, panic, anger, stress and much more. Acupuncture

How it works: Derived from Ancient Chinese medicine, acupuncture involves stimulating the sensory nerves under your skin by inserting very fine needles at certain places in the body. In response, the body releases pain-relieving endorphins which can help counteract the stress and tension caused by anxiety. You might also find acupuncture helpful as a supplementary therapy in addition to other treatments.

How long does it last? An initial acupuncture session usually lasts 30-60 minutes with a typical course of around 6 sessions to see lasting impact.
