Hi, my name is Steve and I'm 27. I was recently medically discharged from the army after serving 5 and a half years with the Royal Engineers. The discharge came after I was diagnosed with social phobia whilst on tour in Kosovo I'm not sure how my condition was caused. However, I have a suspicion it stems from a dislike in having to stand up and read in school all those years ago. And then, probably, made worse because of situations I was faced with in the army. Now I have broken off virtually all my relationships with the outside world and find myself incapable of working. Prior to the army, I worked as a lifeguard at a busy swimming pool on the Wirral (which never bothered me in the slightest and in fact I actually enjoyed working there). I was also in the Royal Marines Reserve (Merseyside). I'll chat or lend support to anyone who has to struggle with an anxiety condition. Take care and hope to speak soon, Steve.

Hi there. My name is paul and I live just outside Glasgow. I took a panic attack seven years ago which led to social phobia, panic disorder and depression. I basicaly shut myself off from the world - wouldn't answer the phone or the door to anyone. For about a year I was crippled with it, struggling to even get out of bed to go to the toilet. I tried medication and made endless visits to the A&E thinking I was dying -the list goes on . I have come through the worst of it and I am a lot better now and I know it was a living hell and I do have bad days, but you can't let it beat you. I never thought I would be where I am today and that I would have achieved what I have these past few years . Anyone suffering from this horrible condition just remember you can get better and god knows I know its hard work but you can do it.

I am really glad to see so many supportive people on the site - it makes a big difference to know we are not alone. I would be very glad to hear from some of you and your experiences - and will be happy to offer support in any way I can.
