Clinical Hypnotherapy

Although clinical hypnotherapy is not a NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) approved therapy, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence available to suggest that this type of therapy is very beneficial to people experiencing anxiety. Indeed over the years that Anxiety UK has been running its therapy services, it has consistently had positive feedback from members about hypnotherapy.

Hypnotherapy aims to provide people with results fairly quickly. Hypnotherapists will use a variety of techniques such as visualisation, which is aimed at producing often quite deep levels of relaxation. Visualisation involves asking you to imagine a feared situation or object while you are in a deep state of relaxation. You are then asked to use positive visualisation to manage how you are feeling and to imagine the experience in a positive way.

At the time of publication, Anxiety UK”s clinical hypnotherapists were all approved/registered with the following hypnotherapy governing bodies: General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR), British Society of Clinical Hypnosis (BSCH),the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).

“I was suffering with panic attacks on the train to the point where it was almost impossible to travel to work. I was feeling very tearful and in a complete state of panic when I went to see a hypnotherapist through Anxiety UK for treatment. I found the hypnotherapist very easy to talk to, and my whole experience of hypnotherapy was very easy and straight forward.

After the 1st session of hypnotherapy, I had a comfortable journey home on the train, and after further sessions I didn’t think twice about travelling on the train. In fact, I now find train journeys quite boring! There were other times when I had panic attacks, especially if I had to speak at a business meeting or in public. Now I don’t feel bothered by that anymore and feel that I can move forward and not avoid the situations that made me feel uncomfortable. I now understand why I have suffered with this problem, and now feel so much more confident and motivated.

I just want to let other sufferers know that there is help out there, and that you can overcome this problem.”

I have recently been found out that I have general anxiety, after various trips to the doctors with lots of physical symptoms. I have just started cbt and was wondering if hypnotherapy would be an opinion. I am having difficulties find the trigger.
    Many Thanks

Hi Katie, sorry for the late reply. There are hypnotherapists in almost every city or town: but choose wisely. I don’t know personally anyone I could recommend, but someone who is registered with a professional body is more likely to be someone you’d want to help you.

    Mel,
I am sorry things haven’t worked out for you yet, but don’t despair. There IS a solution for you. Therapies are just a tool, and if you’ve not found the right therapist with the right skills, you won’t have received the ‘right’ therapy, so don’t write off all the therapies you’ve experienced unless you’ve also tried a few different practitioners doing the same therapies. Something called ‘secondary gain’ explains why some people continue to have problems even after therapy: there is a reason (however deeply hidden) that they ‘need’ to have that problem. Until the day you can release it, and get your life back.

    Leanne,
There ARE hypnotherapists in many areas; you just need to find the right one for you. What background do you want them to have? Do you want them to have a primary profession (such as doctor or nurse) so you can be more sure about them, or do you want someone who seems to understand, and you’re not so fussed about their credentials? Therapy is an investment (whether it’s financial as well, or just time and effort), so like any other investment, it needs you to decide carefully about which path you take (and then you can always take another later on).
